Emerging advanced 2D materials This project offers a unique opportunity to understand the world of 2D materials and how their properties can be tuned by their thickness and phase structure. It will enable you to gain valuable experience in materials synthesis and characterization, as well as cutting-edge research in the field of 2D materials. Are you fascinated by the unique properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials? Join our team to synthesize and characterize emerging 2D materials with thicknesses down to a few and even single layers and lateral dimensions up to hundreds of nanometers and even tens of micrometers. In this Honours/Master project, you will use solution processing, chemical vapor deposition, or mechanical exfoliation with scotch tape to synthesize 2D materials. The phase of these materials will be tuned by thermal treatment, and their morphology will be characterized by atomic force microscopy and their phase structure by X-ray diffraction measurement. You will also employ advanced characterization techniques to study the optoelectronic properties of these materials, such as using modern atomic force microscopy to map the local surface potential and conductivity in real-time, and to investigate photo-excited charge carrier transportation. In the end, you could fabricate a photoelectrochemical cell/device to measure and study its light-to-electricity conversion.
